News release: Öz İplik İş joins the Global Deal Partnership

April 2023

The Global Deal welcomes Öz İplik-İş Sendikası as a new partner. Established in 1978, Öz İplik-İş Sendikası is a trade union representing workers in the textile, garment and leather industry in Türkiye. It is an affiliate of the Confederation of Turkish Real Trade Unions (HAK-İŞ), which is a member of ETUC, ITUC and IndustriALL Global Union, themselves partners of the Global Deal.

In Türkiye, the textile, garment and leather industry employs over a million workers, of which almost 70% are women. The sector is characterised by poor working conditions and insecure employment, low participation of women in management and supervisory roles, and low levels of unionisation.

As part of its commitment to the Global Deal, Öz İplik-İş Sendikası has pledged to take action to enhance social dialogue in the textile industry as a means to advance decent work and contribute to inclusive growth and shared prosperity. For example, the trade union will implement projects to highlight the benefits of social dialogue and promote formalisation, particularly focusing on increasing female employment and improving their working conditions. As a landmark of its pledge, Öz İplik-İş Sendikası will continue to fight gender-based violence and harassment in the workplace, including by conducting training on prevention methods, developing sectoral and enterprise level policies, and establishing high-level platforms with other social dialogue actors to identify sustainable solutions and promote gender equality at work.

“We are pleased to welcome Öz İplik- İş as a new partner of the Global Deal and look forward to working together on their commitment to reinforce social dialogue in the challenging context of the textile, garment and leather industry in Türkiye.” said Alessandro Goglio, Acting Head of the Global Deal Support Unit.
