Global Deal multi-stakeholder partnership to be hosted by the OECD
21 September 2018 - On 19 September, all member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) agreed that the OECD would host a support unit for the Global Deal partnership. The support unit will be a cooperation between the OECD and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), two of the founding members of the Global Deal. By agreeing to take over from Sweden in driving the work of the global multi-stakeholder partnership, the OECD demonstrates that social dialogue and strong labour relations are key to reducing inequality and building trust in a changing world of work. The role of the Global Deal partnership is crucial in this regard. As the number of associated partners is growing and the scope of its activities continues to expand, securing a longer-term structure for the Global Deal comes at an appropriate time and will enable the work of the Global Deal to be taken to the next level.
- Alongside the ILO and other Global Deal partners, we look forward to advancing Prime Minister Löfven’s vision of a renewed and vibrant social dialogue, showing that working together wins everyone the best deal.
The support unit will ensure that the Global Deal is further strengthened and that the growing number of partners will receive support to meet their commitments within the framework of the Global Deal. The support unit will build on the joint expertise and input of the OECD and the ILO, and leverage their respective comparative advantages to continue to ensure global reach and achieve the objectives of the partnership. The support unit will ensure that the ideas at the heart of the Global Deal continue to play a key role in international debates on globalisation, inequality and the future of work.
- The fact that the OECD and the ILO are establishing a joint permanent secretariat for the Global Deal initiative is an important contribution to efforts to create inclusive economic growth, in which good relations between the social partners are fundamental, says Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.
Initiated by Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and launched in autumn 2016, the Global Deal for Decent Work and Inclusive Growth is a multi-stakeholder partnership with some 100 partners – bringing together countries, the private sector, trade unions and other organisations to jointly address labour market challenges and enable all people to benefit from globalisation. The focus of the partnership is to highlight and promote the potential of social dialogue as a means to foster decent work, quality jobs and increased productivity – and by extension to promote greater equality and inclusive growth.
